British chemists, John Rex Whinfield and James Tennant Dickson, employees of the Calico Printer's Association of Manchester, patented “polyethylene terephthalate” in 1941. Polyethylene terephthalate is the basis of synthetic fibers such as polyester, dacron, and terylene.
